ATEX vs IECEx vs UL certification variants

Motorola offers region-specific certification variants of the same hardware. Understanding which certificate applies to your market avoids procurement delays and compliance issues.

ATEX (Directive 2014/34/EU) is mandatory for the EU/EEA market. The ATEX-certified DP4401Ex and DP4801Ex carry a CE mark with the ATEX hexagon symbol and a four-digit Notified Body number. Accessory certification traps

The most common compliance failure with Motorola intrinsically safe radios is using non-certified accessories. Every component that enters the hazardous area — battery, antenna, speaker-microphone, earpiece, carry case — must be listed on the radio's Ex certificate schedule.

Batteries. The DP4401Ex and DP4801Ex use dedicated IMPRES Ex battery packs (PMNN4467, PMNN4468). Standard IMPRES batteries from non-Ex Motorola radios are physically compatible but not certified — using one invalidates the radio's Ex protection. The Ex battery packs have a lower capacity than standard IMPRES batteries because the intrinsic safety barrier limits charging and discharging energy.

Speaker-microphones. Motorola's PMMN4106 remote speaker-microphone is the certified accessory for hazardous area use. Third-party speaker-microphones — even those marketed as "Ex compatible" — are not covered by Motorola's certificate unless explicitly listed. The PMMN4106 has its own Ex marking and is assessed as associated apparatus.

Charging. IMPRES Ex chargers are designed for safe-area use only. The standard practice is to remove the radio from the hazardous area before placing it in the charger. Some sites install Zone 2-rated multi-unit chargers in transition areas — confirm the charger carries its own Ex ec or Ex nA certification for Zone 2 if this is your approach.
